MLS 2017 July 26 Philadelphia Union defeats Columbus Crew SC 3-0

Four days after falling on the road to Crew SC 1-0, the Union exacted revenge by posting a big 3-0 victory at home against a Columbus side that finished with nine men. C.J. Sapong led the way in the Eastern Conference tilt at Talen Energy Stadium with a goal and two assists. The other two tallies came from Ilsinho and Marcus Epps.

Crew SC fell behind in the 20th minute, but their challenge became steeper once Jonathan Mensah was sent off with a straight red card in the 35th minute. Columbus then lost Lalas Abubakar to an ejection in the 76th minute, all but ending their chances of pulling off a late comeback.

C.J. Sapong drew a first-half penalty that he was upset about not taking, and he responded by scoring a goal in the second stanza and setting up an insurance goal with a nice header. Combine those contributions with his first-half assist on Ilsinho’s winner and this was a very good day at the office for Sapong.

Man of the Match…

Jack Harrison

The winger always looked like the most likely source of a goal to break the deadlock and he delivered it in fine style with a crashing finish under Blake after a clever run around the back of the Philadelphia defense.

It wasn’t just his goal which caught the eye on the night – he was a constant menace to the Union backline, slaloming through challenges and exchanging passes with teammates throughout the contest.
