Shaka Smart and the VCU Rams defeat Delaware 68-55

When was the last time you seen a team go scoreless for  8:58 minutes? Delaware failed to score on its first 13 possessions of the game, going 0 of 11 from the field. How do you expect to win a game playing godawful basketball like that? It’s enough to make you sit back and scratch your head and wonder, Nevertheless The University of Delaware couldn’t recover from that dreadful start and VCU used its bench to power ahead.

VCU’s defensive intensity was evident right from the start of the game when they kept Delaware without a point for the first 8:58 of the contest, VCU Senior Bradford Burgess led the rams with 18 points, while grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out two assists, Sophomore Juvonte Reddic had 11 points and nine rebounds and four other Rams scored nine points.

Forward Josh Brinkley recorded his second double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, junior forward Jamelle Hagins finished the game with his 10th double-double of the season scoring 10 points and grabbing 14 rebounds, Notwithstanding sophomore guard Devon Saddler added 10 points.

The Blue Hens will travel to George Mason on Jan. 18 and host an upstart Georgia State squad on Saturday at the Bob Carpenter Center, VCU will return home for a three-game homestand beginning with a Thursday night date with in-state rival William & Mary on ESPNU and game is at the Verizon Wireless Arena schedule for 8 p.m.
