8/18/10 Wilmington DE: I received a special assignment from my editor, in regard to shooting a Civil Rights Legend, General Joseph A. McNeil. My Instructions were to capture General McNeil, the keynote speaker at the Delaware National Guard’s first Unity Day, in photographic print. The event will provide members a chance to meet the living legend, learn about his actions … that became a key catalyst for the civil rights movement, and hear the General’s thoughts about inclusiveness for the common good of society based on his lifetime of experience. McNeil, whose action with “The Greensboro Four” inspired nationwide protests leading to integration, later graduated from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University with a degree in engineering physics, joined the Air Force, serving as a navigator during the Vietnam War. He later joined the U.S. Air Force Reserve, had a corporate career, worked in the Federal Aviation Administration and retired as a USAF Major General.
This assignment means a lot to me. Reason being, had it not been for the decision made by Major General McNeil & his college buddies on that day at the lunch counter at Woolworth, in Greensboro, NC in 1960, I would not have so many opportunities at my disposal today. By no means has my road been a breeze. However, my road has been made a little bit easier, because of people like General McNeil.
